Notebooks
Notebooks are folders that organize your notes into logical groups. They appear in the sidebar as a collapsible tree and can be nested for hierarchical organization.
Creating a Notebook
- Right-click Notebooks in the sidebar.
- Select New Notebook.
- Type a name and press Enter.
Alternatively, open the command palette (Ctrl+P) and select New Notebook.
Renaming and Deleting
Right-click any notebook in the sidebar to access the context menu:
- Rename — edit the notebook name inline.
- Delete — deletes the notebook and all its child notebooks and notes. A confirmation dialog appears before deletion.
⚠️ Warning
Nested Notebooks
Notebooks can be nested to create a hierarchy. To create a child notebook, right-click an existing notebook and select New Notebook — the new notebook is created as a child of the one you right-clicked.
You can also drag and drop notebooks in the sidebar to reparent them.
Nesting depth limits
| Tier | Max nesting depth |
|---|---|
| Free | 2 levels (root + 1 child) |
| Pro | 5 levels |
The depth limit is enforced on the backend. If you attempt to nest beyond your tier's allowed depth, an error is shown and the notebook is not created.
Pro Feature
Nesting notebooks beyond 2 levels (up to 5 levels) requires the NuvoPad Pro upgrade ($9.99 one-time payment). Free users will see an upgrade prompt when accessing this feature.
Moving Notes Between Notebooks
There are two ways to move a note to a different notebook:
- Context menu: Right-click a note card in the note list, select Move to Notebook, and choose the destination.
- Drag and drop: Drag the note card over a notebook name in the sidebar and release. The note moves immediately.
Moving a Note to the Inbox
To “unfile” a note (remove it from any notebook), drag the note card onto the Inbox drop zone in the sidebar, or use the context menu and select Move to Inbox.
Note Counts
Each notebook displays a note count badge showing how many notes it directly contains (not counting child notebooks). The count updates in real time as notes are added or removed.
